I’ll write a review when I get back to Wichita and I’m not as deathly ill.
poiler alert: it’s bad.

883 or 1200?
I’m looking at the XR1200L I found one semi nearby and supposedly its a big departure for a sportster.

They do what they do.
Unfortunately, one of the things they do is put the oil tank right under the seat, in perfect position to roast your chestnuts.

Big departure? What is that supposed to mean?

The XR1200 was actually good.
Well, for Harley.

Sorry your trip ended with you guys being sick. Maybe just a little altitude sickness? Estes Park is actually pretty high up in elevation, not the highest but up there.

It’s not made for America but I think they did eventually bring them over here. Or people did.
It’s a sportster for sportbike guys. I know the Buell XB is that, but I’ve got a Buell 1125R and I want away from the Buells. The oddball parts, the prices involved with them, the limited support they have anymore for aftermarket or dealer support.
I was interested in a sportster 1200 for the 88ci kit or the 1250 kit. It adds some power to the bike that I feel it needs. Sure the sportster wont ever ditch the “its for girls” look but I dont feel a dyna is right for me. At least with a Sportster with some motor work it’ll help. Plus sportsters are dead cheap on insurance because most are used for starters.
I plan on leaning mine, pushing the edge on it, and occasionally doing some “mexico roads” stuff on it.

It’s something more than that. I’ve got all kinds of congestion and such. Currently can’t hear out of my right ear. We rode multiple 12,000+ foot passes over the week.

Clicked his cycle world link. Didn't realize he was talking about THAT XR. As you said, good, for a Harley.

Oh I didn’t realize you meant THAT XR.
Just saw one when I was picking up the Africa Twin the other day. They’re over here. Knew it wasn’t the 883 hugger because of the tail.
Personally I think the XR is ugly. I normally like the look of Sportsters, if done right (48 in particular). So you gain performance but lose out on looks, subjectively at least.
Then it comes time to modify things because it still won’t be as good as you really want it to be. Because let’s face it, it’s still a 568lb (dry) Harley.
I feel like Monsters and XSR900's are Sportsters for sport bike guys. With enough fuel range to actually do Mexico roads. Retro (ish) look with legitimate performance. No thunderous exhaust, but the duck twin still sounds pretty sweet, and can sound pretty damn deep with the right can.

I own a 1200R and absolutely love it. I've had different kinds of bikes, but feel at home on the Roadster.

I watched the Hoonigan sportster build series with their flat track bike build. And it’s whats got me started on them.
Then I found the XR1200 and realized it was 90% there and didn’t look like a regular ass sportster. Nor did it ride like one(going off reviews). So its what got me looking into them.
Just gotta sell my current junk before bringing home another one. Going to sell my Buell and supermoto for the sportster or XR1200. If I get a sportster, it’ll have the 1250 kit on it. That or it was stupid cheap. I love me some stupid cheap mini projects.

It’s another frustrating reminder that Harley makes mediocre bikes on purpose, rather than because they can’t do better.
